February 2009

Emma has the C.Diff. infection again.  That causes gas, bloating, cramping, and diarrhea.  Emma doesn’t have the diarrhea yet.  She was started on an antibiotic yesterday late afternoon.  Late last night there were a few smiles appearing.  So that helped brighten the room a lot.   Emma is sleeping a lot yet so she won’t be coming home in the next few days.  (Today is day 187 in a hospital since 9/11/07.)  Hopefully the next news will be that she is getting better.   (For those that are not from Minneapolis, we got 7 inches of snow.)

They have started some feeding at a slow rate, but there are times when Emma still cannot tolerate that.  So we will see what happens.  There is a snow storm in Minneapolis, so things are at a crawl.  I am heading to the hospital to see what I can find out and to keep Robin company.

Just a quick note to let you all know that Emma is back in the hospital. Robin had her to a doctor appointment yesterday afternoon.  She started not tolerating her feeds (stomach becoming distended) and then started coughing and gagging.  When this started, she was having a hard time to catch her breath and started turning blue.  The doctor called the respiratory doctor and was told to have her taken to the Emergency Department (ED) at Children’s.  Of course, Robin was right across the street for the appointment, so that helped. Once Emma got to the ED, she even started to foam at the mouth.  The ED doctor said that they would be doing xrays of the stomach and lungs and would also be admitting Emma (at least overnight) for observation.  Emma didn’t even cry when they started an IV and didn’t even bother the oxygen tubes.  So she really wasn’t feeling well.  She is still in the hospital.  They have nothing new to tell yet.

Emma is content to lay, jabber and move.  You have to keep an eye on her or she will be into something.  Emma has learned how to rock in her bouncy seat.  She gets it going so fast that you think she is going to fly right out.  She is also learning new sounds.  You never know what sound she is going to make.  She has a couple of new giggles as well.  We still are not sleeping a lot.  But, we are at home and happy.  Not much more news.  Love to all, Grandma Carol

Emma had an appointment with the neurologist and he said that since the last time he saw her, her brain has grown so that she won’t have to come back to see him until in October.

Emma had an appointment with the rehabilitation doctor, and she has ordered braces for Emma’s legs.  Emma will wear the braces only when she is in the stander or when they are working with Emma to try to get her to stand.

Emma is starting to prefer sitting up instead of laying down.  When we lay her on the floor, she lifts her head up and trys to sit up.  When Emma is sitting on your lap and tips, she sits herself back up.  We are a bit wobbly and our head bobs when we are sitting, but it is getting better.

Everyone has a cold and/or sore throat – including Emma.  She has been sneezing all weekend long.  So it was a weekend of cuddling for Emma.  Emma seems to know when it is time to eat again.  She seems to get fussy and once we vent her and start feeding, she seems ok again.  So, I guess she is telling us in her own way what she wants.  She sure knows when daddy, mommy or big sister come.  She is all smiles and turns to watch them.  Emma does not have to be on the apnea monitor any more.
