September 2008

They had to stop feeding Emma by mouth for awhile to see if that was causing the respiratory problems.  She is starting to get better.  She was smiling and jabbering tonight.  So we will see what happens.
Love, Grandma Carol

Emma was back to the clinic on Friday and they gave her an antibiotic.  Robin took her back today and got a stronger NEB medication and they changed the antibiotic.  Emma has to go back to the clinic tomorrow to see how she is doing.  If this medication isn’t helping, Emma may have to be admitted to the hospital again so that they can give her the NEB treatments oftener than every 4 to 6 hours.  Emma still has her smiles but is having a hard time breathing.  Hopefully this stronger NEB medication will help.

Emma went home last night.  Emma did have the swallow study done.  Well, guess what!  Emma refused to take the bottle!  So they tried Emma on some pureed food from a spoon.  She actually ate it and did well on the swallow study.  They tried to give her formula from the little spoon, but that didn’t work very well.  Couldn’t get much formula at a time.  So they gave Emma sips from a medicine cup.  She took it that way.  They keep Emma after the test to see how she was going to do.  They sent up some applesauce for Emma and Emma had applesauce for her afternoon snack.  They are going to see how Emma will do on a sippy cup next.  So, I guess Emma has by-passed the bottle.  They are to offer Emma 1 to 2 ounces of baby food 3 times a day before they start her tube feeding.  When I talked to John last night, Emma ate 3/4 of an ounce of applesauce.  So, we will try this for a couple of weeks to see how she does.  Then we will see what they want us to try next.  Emma is getting a lot better on her head control and actually tries to sit up if you have her in a reclining position.  She is becoming more active when you put her on the floor.  The other day Emma worked her way over to a bag of Michelle’s Reeses Pieces candy and actually started to chew on the bag.  She even got her hand in the bag before they took it away from her.  A good lesson to learn.  Now it is time to kid proof the area where you are going to have Emma.  She rolls part way over and then rolls back.  She arches her back and then scoots up by pushing her feet.  She is just like the hands on a clock too.  She likes to turn herself in circles.  It is great to watch as Emma learns how to move herself and explore.  Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.  Love to all, Grandma Carol.

Emma is back in the hospital again.  Emma came down with a cold.  Robin had been giving her neb treatments at home all weekend.  When the home care nurse came, she suggested Robin take Emma to the clinic.  Emma’s regular pediatrician was not in yesterday, but the other doctors that Emma saw thought that Emma should be taken to Children’s Hospital Emergency Room to be checked out further.  Knowing Emma’s history of a quick temp and all her other respiratory problems, they felt it better for Emma to be seen further.  So at 7 p.m. I met Robin and Emma at the Emergency Room at Children’s.  They did chest x-rays and stomach x-rays.  Chest x-ray was ok.  Stomach x-ray showed a lot of gas.  So we vented her feeding tube.  They gave her several more neb treatments.  They gave them every 2 hours.  With Emma needing them that often, they decided to admit Emma so that Robin didn’t have to deal with nebs all night long.  They wanted to make sure that Emma’s chest stayed clear.  So, at 11 p.m. we went upstairs to 7th floor.  When we got to the hospital we had seen several of the nurses from the 7th floor.  When we got to the 7th floor, we had one of the nurses that we had already seen.  It was like old home week.  All the nurses were coming into the room to see Emma and to see how much she had grown.  Robin and I went and got something to eat and then both headed home to get some rest.  Robin will be heading back to the hospital shortly.  We just got off the phone with her nurse and she was smiling at the nurses and only fused when they wanted the vitals.  They continued the nebs all night long.  The resident was in this morning and said that Emma was well enough to have the swallow study done this afternoon.  This had been scheduled for an out-patient basis, but they will be doing it as an in-patient now.  That will be this afternoon.  Hopefully the nebs will have helped and they can send Emma home today.  I will send another update later.  Love to all, Grandma Carol
